True to label SEBI circular and the Indian trading charge changes since October 2024

SEBI's true to label circular (SEBI/HO/MRD/TPD-1/P/CIR/2024/92, dated 1 July 2024) made exchanges charge every broker the same flat rate from 1 October 2024, so the exchange fee on your contract note is the amount the exchange actually receives. This page logs the changes to Indian trading costs since then that we could confirm from primary sources: exchange fees, STT in October 2024 and April 2026, and broker price changes. Each entry gives the circular or notice, the effective date, the old and new rate, and the extra cost on one fixed example month.

What the true to label circular changed

Before October 2024, NSE, BSE and the other market infrastructure institutions (exchanges, clearing corporations and depositories) charged brokers on volume slabs. A large broker paid a lower rate per crore once its monthly volume was added up, but it usually collected the higher rate from clients every day. SEBI said this could leave clients paying more than the exchange received, and could make the charge shown to clients "incorrect or misleading".

The circular set three rules for these institutions:

    • The charge a broker recovers from you must be the same amount the exchange receives.
    • The charge must be uniform and equal for all members, with no volume slabs.
    • The new flat rates should take existing per-unit charges into account, so that clients benefit from lower charges.

It took effect on 1 October 2024. In plain terms, exchanges replaced slabs with one flat rate. On NSE options that rate (0.03503% of premium) was lower than the 0.0495% that brokers such as Zerodha had been passing on. STT on F&O went up on the same day, so for option traders the two changes nearly cancelled out (see the example month below). For how each charge on a contract note works, see brokerage and charges explained.

One point of confusion: in 2025 SEBI also discussed "true to label" for mutual fund schemes. That is a separate subject. This page is about the 2024 circular on exchange charges.

“The MII charges which are to be recovered from the end client should be True to Label i.e. if certain MII charge is levied on the end client by members (i.e. stock brokers, depository participants, clearing members), it should be ensured by MIIs that the same amount is received by them.”

Indian trading charges changelog, newest first

    1. NSE waives transaction charges on Nifty India FPI 150 F&O

NSE circular NSE/FA/75961 (25 Aug 2026): no transaction charges on futures and options on the Nifty India FPI 150 index from its launch on 12 Aug 2026 until 28 Feb 2027. Who: only traders of this new index. Example month: not affected (it trades other NSE index contracts at standard rates).

      Source: [14]

    2. Zerodha: extra ₹20 per F&O order when cash collateral falls short

Zerodha's post of 27 Mar 2026: orders placed while the 50:50 cash-to-collateral ratio is not kept "will attract an additional ₹20 per order", but only if the cash shortfall exceeds ₹5 lakh. That makes ₹40 per executed F&O order for those accounts. Base brokerage "remains at ₹20 per order", and Zerodha says fewer than 10,000 of its active F&O traders are affected. Example month: ₹0 for most traders. If every order were affected, +₹4,720.00 for the options month (200 orders × ₹20, plus 18% GST) and +₹944.00 for the futures month.

    3. STT on F&O rises again (Finance Act 2026)

Options sold: 0.1% → 0.15% of premium. Options exercised: 0.125% → 0.15% of intrinsic value (buyer pays). Futures sold: 0.02% → 0.05%. The Finance Act 2026 received assent on 30 Mar 2026 (NSE circular NSE/FATAX/73524). Equity delivery (0.1%) and intraday (0.025%) STT did not change. Who: every F&O trader. Example month: +₹500.00 options, +₹9,000.00 futures. More detail in the STT hike impact guide.

    4. NSE folds the IPFT contribution into transaction charges

NSE circular NSE/FA/73061 (27 Feb 2026) rolled the investor protection fund (IPFT) contribution back to its pre-April 2023 level of ₹0.01 per crore and raised transaction charges by the same amount. Per crore, each side: options ₹3,503 + ₹50 → ₹3,552.99 + ₹0.01; futures ₹173 + ₹10 → ₹182.99 + ₹0.01; cash ₹297 + ₹10 → ₹306.99 + ₹0.01. NSE says this ensures "no impact in the overall outflow". Example month: ₹0.00. Your contract note splits the same total differently.

    5. Angel One raises cash-segment brokerage

Angel One's notice: equity intraday goes from the lower of ₹20 or 0.03% to the lower of ₹20 or 0.1%, minimum ₹5. Equity delivery stays at the lower of ₹20 or 0.1%, with the minimum raised from ₹2 to ₹5. F&O is not covered in this notice. Example month: not affected (F&O only).

    6. Angel One sets delivery brokerage, AMC and a shortfall interest charge

Angel One's notice of 30 Sep 2024: equity delivery brokerage of the lower of ₹20 or 0.1% plus GST per executed order, minimum ₹2, from 4 Nov 2024. From 1 Nov 2024, an account maintenance charge (AMC) of ₹60 a quarter for non-BSDA accounts from the second year. From 15 Nov 2024, interest of 0.0342% a day (12.5% a year) on a cash collateral margin shortfall above ₹50,000. The notice does not state the earlier rates. Example month: not priced (no delivery trades, no shortfall assumed).

    7. STT on F&O rises (Finance (No. 2) Act 2024)

Options sold: 0.0625% → 0.1% of premium. Futures sold: 0.0125% → 0.02%. The Act received assent on 16 Aug 2024 (NSE circular NSE/FATAX/63809). Who: every F&O trader. Example month: +₹375.00 options, +₹2,250.00 futures.

    8. Exchanges switch to flat transaction charges

NSE circular NSE/FA/64232 (27 Sep 2024) set flat rates per lakh, each side: options ₹35.03 of premium, futures ₹1.73, cash ₹2.97. BSE notice 20240927-37 set ₹3,250 per crore of premium on Sensex and Bankex options and left other equity derivatives unchanged (futures nil, Sensex 50 and stock options ₹500 per crore). MCX circular MCX/F&A/631/2024 set ₹2.10 per lakh on futures and ₹41.80 per lakh of premium on options. As passed on by Zerodha: NSE options 0.0495% → 0.03503%, futures 0.00188% → 0.00173%, cash 0.00322% → 0.00297%; BSE Sensex and Bankex options 0.0495% → 0.0325%. Example month: −₹341.49 options, −₹106.20 futures (exchange charge plus GST on it).

    9. SEBI issues the true to label circular

SEBI/HO/MRD/TPD-1/P/CIR/2024/92 told exchanges, clearing corporations and depositories to drop volume slabs and charge every member the same rate, effective 1 Oct 2024. It sets no rate itself. The 1 Oct 2024 exchange charge entry above follows from it.

The example month behind every rupee figure

Each change above is priced on the same month, so the figures can be compared:

    • Options month: 100 round trips in NSE index options. Each buys ₹10,000 of premium and sells it for ₹10,000 (a flat trade keeps the arithmetic easy to check). That is 200 orders, ₹10 lakh bought, ₹10 lakh sold and ₹20 lakh of premium turnover.
    • Futures month: 20 round trips in NSE index futures at ₹15 lakh contract value per side, the minimum size SEBI set for new index contracts introduced after 20 Nov 2024. That is 40 orders, ₹3 crore bought, ₹3 crore sold and ₹6 crore of turnover.
    • Brokerage: ₹20 per executed order, the rate on Zerodha's charges page. For futures Zerodha charges 0.03% or ₹20, whichever is lower; 0.03% of ₹15 lakh is ₹450, so ₹20 applies.
    • GST at 18% on brokerage, exchange charges, IPFT and the SEBI fee. SEBI fee ₹10 per crore. Stamp duty 0.003% on options bought and 0.002% on futures bought. Zerodha's charges page showed the same three rates in September 2024 and today, and we found no change in between, so they are held at today's rates.
    • Old exchange rates are the ones Zerodha passed on before 1 Oct 2024. Its charges page at that time listed NSE's IPFT separately: ₹50 per crore of premium for options and ₹10 per crore for futures, plus GST. Those IPFT amounts stayed until 28 Feb 2026.

What the numbers say about each change

For option traders, October 2024 was close to a wash. STT on the options month rose by ₹375.00, while the lower NSE charge and the GST on it saved ₹341.49. The net change was +₹33.51. April 2026 had no offsetting cut, so the full +₹500.00 STT rise landed.

For futures traders, STT is the line that moved. Monthly STT went from ₹3,750 to ₹15,000, four times as much. Total charges for the futures month rose about 2.6 times, from ₹6,766.64 to ₹17,910.44.

For options at a flat ₹20 broker, brokerage is still the biggest line. It is ₹4,720.00 of the ₹7,090.87 total, about 66.6%. Every extra option round trip adds ₹47.20 of brokerage and GST before any tax, whatever the premium. That is why the number of orders you place matters as much as the rates on this page. Our F&O charges benchmark prices the same kind of month across brokers.

The 1 March 2026 NSE change only moved labels. If your contract note now shows almost no IPFT and a slightly higher transaction charge, that is this change. The total per crore is the same.

The old rates are what Zerodha charged clients under the slab system, not a single exchange rate. BSE left futures (nil) and Sensex 50 and stock options (₹500 per crore) unchanged. NSE's 2026 circular cites the September 2024 circular as NSE/FA/64323; the circular itself is numbered NSE/FA/64232. Angel One rows are from Angel One's own notices.

How to check your own contract note against this log

    1. 1

Pick a trade from before and after a date on the log

For example, an option trade in September 2024 and one in April 2026. Open both contract notes from your broker's back office.

    2. 2

Find the turnover each charge is based on

Options STT and exchange charges use premium turnover. Futures use contract value. STT applies only to the sell leg; stamp duty only to the buy leg.

    3. 3

Multiply by the rate in the table above

Use the rate in force on the trade date. A small gap is usually rounding or GST on the exchange charge.

    4. 4

      Note what is left

Anything the log does not explain is your broker's own charge: brokerage, DP charges, interest on shortfall or a platform fee. Ask your broker to explain it in writing.

    Questions about these changes

What does true to label mean?+

It means the exchange charge your broker shows on your contract note must equal what the exchange actually receives for your trade. To make that possible, SEBI told exchanges to drop volume slabs and charge every broker the same flat rate from 1 October 2024.

What is the true to label circular number?+

SEBI/HO/MRD/TPD-1/P/CIR/2024/92, dated 1 July 2024, titled "Charges levied by Market Infrastructure Institutions - True to Label". It applies to stock exchanges, clearing corporations and depositories.

When did the STT hike take effect?+

There were two. The Finance (No. 2) Act 2024 raised F&O STT from 1 October 2024. The Finance Act 2026 raised it again from 1 April 2026, to 0.15% on options sold and 0.05% on futures sold. Trades entered on or after each date pay the new rate.

Were NSE transaction charges revised in 2026?+

Yes, from 1 March 2026, but the total did not change. NSE cut its IPFT contribution to ₹0.01 per crore and raised the transaction charge by the same amount, so options still cost ₹3,553 per crore of premium and futures ₹183 per crore. Apart from launch waivers on a few new products, NSE's circular list shows no other revision of cash or equity derivatives transaction charges up to 13 Oct 2026.

Did my broker raise F&O brokerage in 2026?+

Zerodha's flat ₹20 per F&O order did not change, and Angel One's November 2025 notice covered only cash-segment brokerage. The one 2026 broker change we could verify is Zerodha's extra ₹20 per order for accounts that miss the 50:50 cash rule by more than ₹5 lakh. Check your own broker's charges page, because brokers can change prices with notice.
