    AI for traders

Dhan MCP server and seven other Indian broker MCPs: which are official, which can place orders, and how Claude and ChatGPT connect

Yes, there is an official Dhan MCP server. Dhan's developer docs list it at mcp.dhan.co, and once you sign in with Dhan it can read your account and place, modify and cancel real orders. We checked eight Indian brokers on 13 October 2026 and found official MCP servers at seven: Dhan, Groww and 5paisa say theirs can place orders, Zerodha's can set GTT orders only, and the Upstox, FYERS and Kotak Neo servers can't place orders, though Upstox has a separate Agent Skill that can. Angel One had no official server, only community-built ones.

What an MCP server is, in plain words

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting AI apps to outside systems. Its own site compares it to a USB-C port: one plug shape that many devices can use. When a broker runs an MCP server, it publishes a short menu of actions, called tools, such as "show holdings", "get a quote" or "place an order". Your AI app (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) is the client that reads that menu.

When you ask a question, the AI picks a tool, the broker's server runs it on your account, and the answer comes back into your chat. So the Dhan MCP server question is really two questions:

    • Which tools did the broker switch on? Reading holdings is one thing. Placing an order is another.
    • Who holds your login? Either you sign in on the broker's own page and the broker keeps the session, or you copy keys and codes into a file on your computer.

The grid below answers both for each broker, from the broker's own pages.

Checked 13 Oct 2026 on each broker's own site: docs.dhanhq.co MCP pages and a DhanTeam staff reply of 21 Aug 2026; groww.in update of 4 Aug 2025; 5paisa's MCP page, Windows setup guide and forum post of 17 Jun 2025; Zerodha's Z-Connect post of 20 May 2025, its MCP product page and the zerodha/kite-mcp-server README; Upstox's MCP page, Agent Skills page and announcements of 6 Jun and 7 Jul 2026; the FYERS Team community post of 7 Nov 2025; Kotak Neo's MCP page. Zerodha's own pages differ: the Z-Connect post says read-only except GTT, the product page says only "Read-only access", and the same post lists portfolio analysis while also saying portfolio data is unavailable. Groww's update page shows order examples; its engineering blog of 25 Aug 2025 adds placement and modification, and neither mentions cancelling. FYERS details also checked against its help article (updated 18 Dec 2025). Upstox's pages differ on where the Agent Skill runs: its plugin pages offer it in the Claude desktop and web app, while its MCP page says it runs only inside a coding agent.

Broker by broker: what each official page says

    Dhan MCP server

Dhan's docs describe a "first-party" server at mcp.dhan.co. You add that address as a custom connector and sign in through Dhan's own OAuth page; the docs say Dhan "uses OAuth, not a static token". The order tool's own warning reads: "These place real orders on your live Dhan account." Dhan says the assistant shows full order details first and runs a margin check by default.

Two details matter for traders. Alerts created through the AI can carry a linked order that fires by itself later, when the price condition is met. And a Dhan staff reply on its community forum (21 August 2026) says trade history is not exposed through MCP; you get portfolio, positions, today's order book and today's trade book. On "dhan mcp cost": Dhan states no MCP fee. Live quotes and option chains need the Data API subscription, which Dhan prices at ₹499 plus taxes a month (compared with other API fees in our algo trading charges guide).

    Groww MCP

Groww's August 2025 post calls it "very early-stage tech". Its examples include buy, limit and stop-loss orders, and it says you need DDPI to place sell orders. It covers stocks and F&O only. A later post on Groww's engineering blog (25 August 2025) adds that sign-in uses OAuth, the user token "remains active for a day", and the server handles order placement and modification.

    5paisa MCP

The only one here that runs on your own computer. 5paisa's Windows guide has you download its code from GitHub and type your API keys, your TOTP secret and your login PIN into a file called creds.json. 5paisa says these stay on your device and that every order, backtest and data pull is logged.

    Zerodha Kite MCP

Zerodha's article says operations are read-only and order placement is "not available except for GTT orders". Zerodha's code on GitHub does include order tools; its README says the hosted server leaves out "potentially destructive trading operations" and that people who run their own copy with their own API keys can use them. More detail is in our Kite MCP guide.

Upstox MCP and Upstox Agent Skills

Upstox runs two separate things. The MCP server is read-only and needs a fresh OAuth consent every day. The Agent Skill, launched on 6 June 2026, is a rules file plus Upstox's Python SDK that a coding agent such as Claude Code or Codex uses to place, modify and cancel live orders, with a daily access token you generate yourself. Since 7 July 2026 both install from one Claude plugin marketplace, so read the name before you click install.

FYERS MCP and Kotak Neo MCP

Both say their servers can't place orders. FYERS lets the AI create watchlists and manage price alerts. Kotak Neo logs you in by scanning a QR code with the Kotak Neo app and works only in the desktop Claude and Cursor apps.

    Angel One: community servers only

We found no Angel One MCP server on its SmartAPI site or among the 28 public projects in its GitHub organisation. The servers that show up for "angel one mcp server" are built by outside developers. One was posted on Angel One's own SmartAPI forum on 29 August 2026 by an ordinary forum user, not by Angel One staff.

“Because the skill can place live, irreversible financial orders, it enforces eight safety rules before any order is placed, modified, or cancelled.”

Checked 13 Oct 2026. Sources as in the capability grid, plus Dhan's "What is MCP?" page and its Data API support article. Groww's requirements are from its post of 4 Aug 2025; its OAuth sign-in and one-day token are from its engineering blog of 25 Aug 2025. Whatever a server returns becomes part of your conversation with the AI app, so that app's own privacy terms apply as well.

Official or community-built: how to tell before you connect

Search "dhan mcp github" or "angel one mcp server" and the top results are MCP directories such as Glama, mcp.so and LobeHub. These list projects by outside developers next to brokers' own servers, and a directory may label a listing "Official" on its own. One Dhan listing we opened was built by an individual developer, listed 18 tools including ones to place, modify and cancel orders, needed your Dhan API key and secret, and was marked inactive.

    Three checks settle it:

    • The address. Official servers in our grid sit on the broker's own domain: mcp.dhan.co, mcp.kite.trade, mcp.groww.in, mcp.upstox.com, mcp.fyers.in and neo.kotaksecurities.com. 5paisa's code sits in the 5paisa GitHub organisation.
    • The broker's docs link to it. If the broker's developer site doesn't mention the server, treat it as unofficial.
    • What it asks you for. Hosted official servers send you to the broker's own login page. A server that wants your PIN and TOTP secret holds everything needed to log in as you. Angel One's own SmartAPI code, for example, logs in with an API key, your client code, your PIN and a code generated from your TOTP QR value. Note that 5paisa's official server also asks for a TOTP secret and PIN, stored in a file on your computer.

Unofficial does not mean unsafe, and official does not mean risk-free. It tells you who answers for the code when something goes wrong.

Safety checklist before you connect a broker account to an AI app

    • Start with a server that can't place orders

Upstox, FYERS and Kotak Neo say theirs can't. Zerodha's hosted server is limited to GTT orders.

    • Check the server address is on the broker's own domain

Compare it with the address in the broker's docs, letter by letter.

    • Never type your PIN or TOTP secret into a server you didn't get from the broker

Hosted official servers ask you to log in on the broker's page instead.

    • Switch off order tools you don't want the AI to call

Claude's help page says you can disable individual tools from its "Search and tools" menu.

    • Don't click "Allow always" for an order tool

Read each approval request; it shows what the AI is about to send.

    • Read every order preview in full

Symbol, buy or sell, quantity in lots, order type, price and product (intraday or delivery).

    • Check alerts that carry a linked order

At Dhan, an alert created through the AI can place its order later without another prompt.

    • Keep a broker kill switch within reach

Our kill switch comparison lists where it sits at each broker.

    • Disconnect when you're done

Zerodha says you can revoke access any time; remove the connector in your AI app's settings too.

Using broker MCPs with Claude and ChatGPT

Most Indian broker servers name Claude first. Claude's help page, checked on 13 October 2026, says custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and that "Free users are limited to one custom connector". Groww's post from August 2025 said only Claude Pro users could see the custom connector option "for now"; Claude's current page no longer says that. Zerodha's article warns that on Claude's free plan you may hit the conversation length limit quickly.

For ChatGPT, Upstox says its server works "with Developer mode" and Dhan gives steps for the ChatGPT desktop app. Zerodha's pages don't list ChatGPT. If you want to try one, follow the broker's own read-only guide, such as Zerodha's Kite MCP post or Upstox's MCP page.

    Three read-only questions to ask

    1. "List my open F&O positions with expiry date, quantity and current P&L. Don't suggest any trades."
    2. "Show today's order book, including rejected orders, with the rejection reason for each."
    3. "Compare margin used with margin available right now, and list which positions use the most margin."

Each one only reads. None asks the AI what to buy or where the market is going, which no broker server can know. Orders placed through a broker's MCP still pass through the broker's order system; none of the broker pages we read says how SEBI's retail algo framework treats them.

What the broker's server can never tell the AI

A broker MCP hands the AI your fills: symbol, price, time, quantity, P&L. It has no field for why you took the trade, where you meant to exit, whether you moved your stop, or whether you were trading to win back the morning's loss. Ask it "why do I keep losing on Thursdays?" and it can only guess from numbers.

OneTradeJournal takes the other route. You log each trade by hand, with your plan, stop, target, emotions, mistakes and notes, and the paid Ask Your Journal feature lets you chat with an AI about those logged trades. It doesn't connect to any broker and can't place orders, so nothing it says can turn into a trade. It can still be wrong, and it only knows what you logged. If you want an AI to look at your account, the grid above shows what each broker allows. If you want an AI to look at your decisions, they have to be written down somewhere first. The free AI journal reviewer shows the idea.

Short answers on Dhan, Angel One, Kite and Upstox MCP

Does Dhan have an MCP server?+

Yes. As of 13 October 2026, Dhan's developer docs list an official server at mcp.dhan.co/mcp. You sign in through Dhan's OAuth page, and it can read your portfolio and place, modify and cancel real orders.

    Is Dhan MCP free?+

Dhan's MCP pages state no fee for MCP itself. Live quotes and option chains need Dhan's Data API subscription, ₹499 plus taxes a month; without it those requests return "Unauthorized".

Does Angel One have an MCP server?+

We found no official one on 13 October 2026. The servers listed for Angel One on MCP directories are built by outside developers. Angel One's own SmartAPI login uses an API key, your PIN and a TOTP code, so a server that logs in for you has to hold those.

    Can Upstox MCP place orders?+

No. Upstox says its MCP server is read-only. Its separate Agent Skill, launched on 6 June 2026 for coding agents like Claude Code and Codex, can place, modify and cancel live orders.

Can Claude trade on my Zerodha account through Kite MCP?+

Zerodha says Kite MCP is read-only apart from GTT orders. Its GitHub README says the hosted server leaves out "potentially destructive trading operations".

Do I need Claude Pro to connect a broker?+

Claude's help page says custom connectors work on the Free plan too, limited to one. Groww's August 2025 post said Pro only "for now", so check Groww's current page before paying.
