Kill switch in trading apps: what Zerodha, Groww, Dhan, Upstox and 10 other Indian brokers lock, for how long, and whether you can undo it

A kill switch in a trading app lets you lock yourself out of new orders for a set time, usually in F&O or in segments you pick. Of 14 Indian brokers we checked on 13 October 2026, seven describe a client kill switch on their own pages: Zerodha and Upstox lock a segment for at least 12 hours, Groww, Kotak Neo and Sahi lock until 11:59 PM, and Dhan and FYERS lock for the rest of the trading day. Only Sahi says its switch also closes your open positions; Zerodha, Groww, Upstox and Dhan ask you to close them first.

What a kill switch in a trading app actually does

A kill switch is a self-imposed lock. You switch it on, and the broker stops accepting new orders from you in the segments it covers until a timer runs out. It exists for the moment after a bad trade when you know you should stop and still feel the pull to take one more.

Across the brokers that document one, three questions decide how strong the lock is:

    • What it covers. Some lock only F&O and commodity (Groww). Some let you pick segments (Zerodha, Upstox, Kotak Neo). Some lock all trading (FYERS).
    • How long it lasts. At least 12 hours at Zerodha and Upstox, after which you switch it back on yourself; until 11:59 PM at Groww, Kotak Neo and Sahi; the rest of the trading day at Dhan and FYERS.
    • Whether you can undo it. Zerodha, Upstox, Groww and Sahi give no way to switch it off early, and Kotak Neo has no manual re-enable (it points you to support only for urgent matters). Dhan's FAQ says a second activation on the same day cannot be switched off manually, and FYERS says its Smart Exit version cannot be overridden that day.

What a kill switch usually does not do is close your trades. Most brokers want you to exit open positions and cancel pending orders before the switch will turn on. It is also different from a stop-loss or a daily loss exit, which act on positions. A kill switch acts on you. If revenge trading is the reason you are reading this, how to avoid revenge trading covers the habit side.

Kill switch in Zerodha, Groww, Dhan and the other apps, broker by broker

    Zerodha

Zerodha launched its Kill switch on 9 June 2021 as part of Nudge, its set of warnings against over-trading. You turn off one or more segments, and once a segment is off you can turn it back on only after 12 hours, using an OTP on Console's segment activation page. A shorter Zerodha product update of 25 November 2025 puts it more loosely: once enabled, "you won't be able to place trades for the rest of the day". The support page's 12-hour rule is the more precise of the two. Zerodha's 2021 post said it was working on a version that triggers itself at a loss level you set; we found no such option on its support pages today.

    Groww

Groww has two tools. Lock F&O Trading (Groww also calls it the Kill Switch, launched 21 July 2026) locks F&O and commodity until 11:59 PM, and Groww says the user cannot reverse it. F&O Pause (February 2025) stops F&O too, but you can resume it any time. If you searched "lock F&O trading in Groww", the lock is the one that cannot be undone.

    Upstox

Upstox lets you pick segments, asks for an email OTP, and makes you wait 12 hours before re-enabling. Its help page says open orders in the segment are cancelled automatically when you switch it off.

    Dhan

Dhan's Kill Switch for Over-Trading sits under Trader's Control. Its FAQ says that if you activate it twice on the same day, it cannot be deactivated manually and stays on until the end of the day. Dhan also links the switch to its P&L Exit, covered below.

    FYERS

FYERS calls its version Take a Break. It turns off all trading segments together and needs an OTP. Inside Smart Exit, Take a Break can switch on by itself once your account-level stop-loss or target is hit, and FYERS says it cannot be overridden that day.

    Kotak Neo

Kotak Neo blocks the segments you choose until 11:59 PM and turns them back on at midnight. Its bulletin lists clear gaps: orders through Strategy Bot, InstaTrade, Stockcase, Smallcase, SIPIT, Cherry, Nest Trader and Trade APIs still go through, and a session open on another device may keep placing orders until you log out and back in. Its Scalper Pro tool is covered: Kotak says Scalper Pro orders are blocked once you refresh that tab.

    Sahi

Sahi's blog says its Kill Switch cancels open orders, squares off every position at market, and blocks equity intraday and F&O until 11:59 PM. The same post also mentions closing "between 30 mins and 1 to 3 hrs", which suggests shorter durations, while its FAQ gives only 11:59 PM. We could not confirm which durations the app offers.

    Angel One

We found no kill switch on Angel One's own pages. Its segment FAQ says there is no online option to deactivate a segment; you raise a ticket. Angel One does offer Secure Exit, a total profit and loss trigger, listed in the next table.

    Brokers we could not verify

For 5paisa, Shoonya and mStock we found no page on the broker's own site describing a client kill switch. ICICI Direct lets you switch F&O off in Settings, which is a segment deactivation without a stated timer. HDFC Sky's help pages describe freezing online access, a security feature explained further down. Alice Blue's kill switch, as described by its community team, stops strategies running on its 1LY Algos platform. Check these apps yourself before relying on any of them.

How to turn on the kill switch, app by app

    1. 1

      Zerodha (Kite app)

Tap your user ID > Profile > Segments, tap the toggle for the segment, then Continue. Zerodha says the segment turns off within 5 minutes. On the web: account.zerodha.com > Kill switch > toggle > Apply changes > Confirm.

    2. 2

      Groww

Profile > Settings > Lock F&O Trading. Read the screen, which says the lock runs until 11:59 PM and cannot be reversed, then use Slide to lock.

    3. 3

      Upstox (app)

Tap the Upstox icon (top left) > Trading segments > Kill Switch, choose the segment, Save Changes, tap I understand, then enter the 6-digit OTP sent to your email.

    4. 4

      Dhan

App: Profile > Settings > Trader's Control > Kill Switch for Over-Trading > Activate Kill Switch. Web: web.dhan.co > Money > Trader's Control, same steps.

    5. 5

      FYERS

Profile > Segments tab > Take a Break toggle, then confirm with the OTP. For the automatic version: Portfolio > Positions > Smart Exit, set a stop-loss or target, enable Take a Break and confirm with OTP.

    6. 6

      Kotak Neo

Profile > Account Details > Segments > Kill Switch > Manage. Pick one, several or all segments, tap Disable Segments and confirm. Then log out of other devices and log back in.

    7. 7

      Sahi

Profile > Kill Switch. Sahi says this squares off open positions at market, so exit at your own price first if that matters to you.

Daily loss exits that can also lock you out

Some brokers pair the kill switch with a profit and loss trigger, so the lock can switch on at your loss number without you pressing anything. Each row is from the broker's own page, checked 13 October 2026.

Checked 13 Oct 2026. Dhan and Sahi say these exits go out as market orders, so the loss you end with can be larger than the number you set; Dhan says the gap can be bigger in volatile markets, and Upstox says execution depends on market conditions and liquidity. The Groww, FYERS and Angel One pages we opened do not state the order type. Upstox's row is from a post by its product team on the Upstox community forum (21 Jan 2026).

Kill switch, P&L exit or account freeze: which tool is for what

These features get mixed up in search results, and each one answers a different moment:

    1. You have decided to stop for the day. That is the kill switch. You press it while your head is still clear, and it holds even when the urge comes back.
    2. You want the stop to happen at a loss number, whether or not you are watching. That is a daily loss exit. At Dhan, FYERS and Sahi it can also switch the lock on, so a loss cap closes the day instead of just closing the trades.
    3. You think someone else is using your account, or your phone is lost. That is a freeze of online access, and NSE members were to offer it from 1 July 2024 under SEBI's circular SEBI/HO/MIRSD/POD-1/P/CIR/2024/4 (12 January 2024). NSE's framework (NSE/INSP/61529, 8 April 2024) says a request made during trading hours must be acted on within 15 minutes, pending orders are cancelled, details of open positions must reach you within one hour, and access comes back only after the broker validates your request. Kotak's help page draws the same line: kill switch for a break, freeze for suspected fraud or a stolen device.
    4. You never want to trade F&O again. That is deactivating the segment, which at Angel One means a support ticket and at ICICI Direct a toggle under Trading preference.
    5. None of these suits you, or your broker has none. A written rule works at every broker: a loss number for the day and a time after which you stop. It has no lock, so on its own it relies on you keeping to it.

For how loss exits compare in more detail, see the guide on P&L based exits and loss limits.

“The kill switch is an emergency function and the last level of defence against any Algorithm malfunction.”

Kill switch for algo and API traders

The word means two different things in Indian rules, and API traders need both.

At the exchange, it is aimed at a misbehaving algo. SEBI's February 2025 circular says exchanges shall "continue to have the ability to use the kill switch for orders emanating from a particular algo id", and its footnote describes the kill switch as something expected to halt trading automatically on pre-defined conditions. NSE's implementation standards add that exchanges can kill any rogue algo that is impacting the market. After two extensions, SEBI made this framework applicable to all brokers from 1 April 2026. In plain terms, this protects the market from a broken program. It is not a button for a trader's bad day.

At the broker, the rules ask for automatic limits. NSE's consolidated circular for broker trading systems lists risk controls that algo orders must pass, including price and quantity checks, a cumulative open order value check per client, position and trading limits set by the broker, and no algo orders placed as market orders. It also requires pre-defined parameters for an automatic stoppage when an algo loops or runs away. We found no SEBI or NSE text requiring brokers to give retail clients a self-service kill switch; the brokers that offer one do so as their own feature.

Whether your broker's kill switch reaches API orders differs a lot:

    • Dhan documents API calls to activate, deactivate and check the kill switch, and its P&L exit API takes an enableKillSwitch flag.
    • Upstox documents an API to enable or disable segments and a status API. After calling it, you must regenerate your access token for the switch to take effect, and if one segment in a request fails, none are updated.
    • Zerodha staff said on the Kite Connect forum in August 2023 that the kill switch is a back office function and Kite Connect offers only trading platform capabilities, so you switch it on in Console or the Kite app.
    • Kotak Neo says its kill switch does not stop orders sent through Trade APIs or Strategy Bot. If you trade by API there, the app switch is no safety net.
    • FYERS documents Take a Break for its app and web platform; we did not find it in API documentation we could verify.

Static IPs for API orders have their own guide: static IP for algo trading.

Limits to build into your own algo before it goes live

    • A maximum loss for the day, checked before every new order

When realised plus open loss reaches it, stop sending orders and alert yourself. Don't rely on noticing it on a screen.

    • A maximum number of orders per day and per second

NSE's May 2025 standards set the registration-free threshold at 10 orders per second per exchange or segment (exchanges can change it after notice), and your broker can set a lower limit for you. Stay well under both.

    • A cap on position size per instrument and on open positions

Your broker's system will reject orders beyond its position and exposure limits, but your own cap should bite first.

    • Limit prices on every order

NSE's control list for broker systems says algo orders shall not go to the exchange as market orders, so price each one.

    • A stop for loops and repeated rejections

Count executed, unexecuted and unconfirmed orders before releasing more, the same test NSE asks of broker systems, and halt after a run of rejections.

    • Know where your broker's switch is

Dhan and Upstox: by API. Zerodha: Console or Kite app only. Kotak Neo: the app switch does not cover Trade API orders.

    • Confirm the switch actually took effect

Call the status endpoint after activating it (Dhan and Upstox both have one). On Upstox, regenerate the access token.

    • Log every stop with time and reason

A one-line record of why the algo stopped is what you review the next morning.

After the lock: finding the pattern that made you reach for it

A kill switch stops orders. It cannot tell you why the day went the way it did, or whether this was the third time this month. That part is a review, and it works best the same evening while the details are fresh:

    1. Write down the time you switched it on and the trade just before.
    2. Note what you felt on that trade and on the one before it: anger, fear of missing out, the wish to win it back.
    3. Ask whether the last two or three trades followed your plan, or were bigger or faster than usual.
    4. Record the day's loss next to the limit you had set, if you had one.
    5. Look back over a few weeks: same weekday, same time of day, same setup?

OneTradeJournal is a manual trading journal built for Indian F&O traders, and it is set up for this kind of review. You log each trade by hand, with entry and exit emotions, impulse reason, plan deviation and mistakes. It flags patterns such as revenge trading, size spikes and overtrading; these flags are heuristics, not diagnoses. Its pre-trade checklist warns you from your own history, for example when you have already hit your logged loss limit for the day. It warns only. It cannot block an order or switch on your broker's kill switch, and it does not connect to any broker. You can try the free revenge trading detector, or build your own list with the pre-trade checklist guide. How a journal differs from a dedicated kill switch tool is covered in OneTradeJournal vs KillSwitch.

    Kill switch questions traders ask

What is the kill switch meaning in trading?+

For a retail trader, it is a setting in your broker's app that blocks you from placing new orders in some or all segments for a set time, such as 12 hours or until 11:59 PM. At the exchange, the same word also means a tool to halt orders from a malfunctioning algo or cancel a broker's outstanding orders.

Can I undo the kill switch in Groww?+

Not for Lock F&O Trading. Groww says the lock cannot be disabled or reversed by the user and lasts until 11:59 PM that trading day. Its separate F&O Pause can be resumed any time.

Does the kill switch in Zerodha close my positions?+

Zerodha's page does not describe closing them for you. It asks you to make sure you have no open orders or positions before you disable a segment. Once disabled, the segment can be re-enabled only after 12 hours.

Is there a kill switch in Angel One?+

We found none on Angel One's own pages as of 13 October 2026. Its segment FAQ says segments can be deactivated only by raising a ticket. It does offer Secure Exit, which squares off intraday equity and F&O positions at total profit or loss triggers you set.

How long does the Upstox kill switch last?+

Upstox's help pages and API documentation both say you can re-enable a segment 12 hours after you disabled it.

Does a broker kill switch stop my API or algo orders?+

It depends on the broker. Dhan and Upstox let you trigger it by API. Kotak Neo says its kill switch does not block Trade API or Strategy Bot orders. Build your own daily loss and order limits into the algo either way.
