AI for traders
Kite MCP: what Zerodha's AI connector can and can't do, how it works with Claude, and what happens to your data
Kite MCP is Zerodha's official, free MCP server at mcp.kite.trade/mcp. It lets an AI app such as Claude read your Zerodha holdings, positions, margins and today's orders, and Zerodha says it can set GTT orders but cannot place regular orders. When we asked the server for its tool list on 13 October 2026 it returned 22 tools, including order tools that Zerodha says its hosted server does not allow. You sign in on Kite's own login page, and you should expect to log in again every day.

Kite MCP in one minute
Kite MCP is a server run by Zerodha that speaks MCP (Model Context Protocol), a common plug format that AI apps use to call outside services. You connect it to an AI app, log in with your Kite ID, and the AI can then fetch data from your Zerodha account while you chat.
- Kite MCP server URL:
https://mcp.kite.trade/mcp. Zerodha's README says ahttps://mcp.kite.trade/sseendpoint is also available. - Who makes it: Zerodha. The code is public in Zerodha's own GitHub account under the MIT licence, built on Zerodha's Kite Connect APIs.
- Zerodha MCP cost: Zerodha's launch article (20 May 2025) says it is "completely free of charge". A Zerodha reply under that article says you don't need your own API key for the hosted server.
- Can it trade? Zerodha's article says all operations are read-only and "order placement is not available except for GTT orders".
The rest of this page goes question by question, then covers setup, login, errors and privacy. For how Kite MCP compares with Dhan, Groww, Upstox and other brokers' servers, see our Indian broker MCP overview.
Can Kite MCP do it? 16 questions, checked 13 Oct 2026
Answers from Zerodha's own article, product page, GitHub code and staff replies, plus the tool list the hosted server returned on 13 Oct 2026. "Tool listed" means the server offers the tool; we did not log in to test it.
| Can Kite MCP… | Short answer | What the source says |
|---|---|---|
| Read my holdings? | Yes | get_holdings returns quantity, average price, last price and P&L. It has no purchase date, so it can't split long-term from short-term holdings (GitHub issue #91, open) |
| Read my F&O and intraday positions? | Yes | get_positions; Zerodha's article lists positions and unrealised P&L |
| Show my margins and day P&L? | Yes | get_margins; the article lists available margins and day P&L |
| Show today's orders and trades? | Yes, today only | Kite Connect docs say the order book "only lives for a day" and the trades call returns trades "for the day" |
| Show my past trades or full tradebook? | No | The article lists "historical trade data" as currently unavailable. Requests for this are open on GitHub (#71, #91) |
| Read my mutual fund holdings? | Tool listed | get_mf_holdings is in the tool list. Zerodha's article doesn't mention mutual funds, but a Zerodha reply under it (10 Nov 2025) says you can get mutual fund holdings via Kite MCP |
| Fetch live quotes? | Tool listed | get_quotes, get_ltp and get_ohlc. A Zerodha reply (22 May 2025) says the data is real-time |
| Fetch historical price candles? | Tool listed | get_historical_data; the article lists historical data for backtesting |
| Place, modify or cancel a regular order? | No, on Zerodha's hosted server | The tools appear in the list, but Zerodha says order placement is not available except GTT. A user reported such a call failing with "Insufficient permission", and a Zerodha GitHub member replied that the hosted version is read-only (GitHub #25, June 2025) |
| Create, change or delete a GTT order? | Yes | The article allows GTT orders; the tools are place_gtt_order, modify_gtt_order and delete_gtt_order |
| Set price alerts or edit watchlists? | No | No such tool. Requests are open on GitHub (#65, #75, #77) |
| Work with Claude? | Yes | Zerodha's article covers Claude Desktop and Claude Code; a Zerodha forum reply covers claude.ai custom connectors |
| Work with ChatGPT? | Unclear | Not on Zerodha's product page or article. Zerodha replies said "still working on" ChatGPT support (10 Nov 2025), then "you can use Kite MCP on ChatGPT too" (1 Oct 2026). GitHub issue #54 (13 Oct 2025), saying it fails in ChatGPT, is still open with no Zerodha reply |
| Work on my phone? | Through the Claude app | Not on Zerodha's list. A Zerodha forum reply (1 Jul 2026) says a connector added on Claude's web or desktop app syncs to Claude mobile |
| Cost anything? | No | "Completely free of charge" per the article; no Kite Connect app or API key needed for the hosted server |
| Need a paid Kite Connect subscription? | Not for the hosted server | Zerodha's README says the hosted server needs no API keys. Running your own copy needs a Kite Connect app: Kite Connect Personal is ₹0 (orders, GTT, alerts); Connect is ₹500 a month (live streaming and historical candles) |

The 22 tools, sorted by what they touch
We sent the hosted server a standard "list your tools" request on 13 October 2026, without logging in. It reported version v0.3.2 and these tools:
- Logging in (1):
login, which gives you a Kite login link. - Your account (10):
get_profile,get_margins,get_holdings,get_positions,get_orders,get_trades,get_order_history,get_order_trades,get_gtts,get_mf_holdings. - Market data (5):
get_quotes,get_ltp(last traded price),get_ohlc(open, high, low, close),get_historical_data,search_instruments. - Orders (3):
place_order,modify_order,cancel_order. - GTT orders (3):
place_gtt_order,modify_gtt_order,delete_gtt_order.
That adds up to 22, the same set the README lists. The three regular order tools still show up on the hosted server even though Zerodha says it doesn't allow them. When a user hit an error with them in June 2025, a member of Zerodha's GitHub organisation replied that the hosted version only offers read-only operations, and pointed to running your own copy.
One more detail from that list: every tool, even get_holdings, carries the label "destructive" and none is labelled "read-only". Those labels are hints that AI apps can use to decide when to ask before a tool runs. Kite MCP's hints don't separate reading from writing, so read each approval request yourself.
Running your own copy to switch order tools on
The README says the hosted server leaves out risky trading operations, and that you can generate your own API keys and run the server yourself to use them. That means creating a Kite Connect app. Zerodha's API page lists Kite Connect Personal at ₹0 with orders, GTT and alerts, and Kite Connect at ₹500 a month for live streaming and historical candles. Orders sent this way are API orders, and Zerodha requires a static IP for API order placement from 1 April 2026 (our static IP guide covers the setup). An AI that sends real orders is a different risk, covered in our guide to AI agents that place trades.
“In the hosted version, we only provide operations that are read-only – order placement is not available. If you want to use these, you will need to run the server locally with keys from https://developers.kite.trade/apps”

Kite MCP with Claude: setup routes and first login
- 1
Pick a route
Zerodha's Kite MCP article documents Claude Desktop through a config file (it needs Node.js installed), plus VS Code and Claude Code. A Zerodha reply on its TradingQnA forum (1 July 2026) describes the other route: a custom connector added on claude.ai. Claude's help page says Free plans get one custom connector.
- 2
Desktop route: add the config entry
In Claude Desktop open Settings, then Developer, then Edit Config. Add a server named
kitethat runsnpx mcp-remote https://mcp.kite.trade/mcp, save, and restart the app fully. Copy the exact text from Zerodha's article. - 3
Kite MCP connector route: add it on claude.ai
For individual plans, Claude's help page puts this under Customize, then Connectors, then "+ Add" and "Add custom connector". Give it a name and paste
https://mcp.kite.trade/mcpas the server URL. - 4
Log in on Kite's own page
Ask Claude to log in to Kite. The
logintool returns a link; open it, sign in with your Kite ID and two-factor code, then go back to the chat. Zerodha says your credentials never pass through Claude. - 5
Approve tool calls as they come
Claude's help page says to click "Allow always" only for a tool you trust to run unsupervised. Keep GTT tools on ask, or switch them off.
- 6
Kite MCP on mobile
Zerodha's forum reply says to add the connector on Claude's web or desktop app first; it then syncs to the Claude mobile app. Claude's help page says custom connector connections come from Anthropic's cloud across its apps, mobile included. We found nothing saying the desktop config-file route carries over to a phone.
Kite MCP errors and what helped, from Zerodha replies and GitHub issues
Error text as users reported it. "Zerodha said" marks replies from Zerodha staff or organisation members; other fixes are user reports, not confirmed by Zerodha. Checked 13 Oct 2026.
| What you see | What it means | What helped |
|---|---|---|
| "Please log in first using the login tool" right after Kite says login succeeded | The login didn't attach to the chat's session. Reported by users with Claude connectors from July 2026 (GitHub #82, #83, #90, open). Zerodha has not called it a Kite MCP bug | Zerodha staff said on TradingQnA (2 and 3 July 2026) that Kite MCP works with Claude and asked for a support ticket. On Z-Connect (24 July 2026) Zerodha said "There doesn't appear to be an issue with the Kite MCP itself" and suggested contacting Claude support. Users on GitHub reported success with the Claude Desktop config-file route or with Claude Code |
| "Session not found" or a new login request the next morning | The session ended or was lost. Kite login tokens expire at 6 AM the next day. In May 2025 Zerodha blamed repeated mid-chat login requests on "an external dependency" | Log in again. Replying to a "session not found" report in May 2025, Zerodha said: "please login again, should work fine after that" |
| Claude says the conversation has reached its maximum length | The chat's context window (everything the AI can hold at once) is full. Holdings and order lists use a lot of it | Zerodha said to start a new chat, and that Claude's free plan hits the limit sooner |
| "MPC -32603: Insufficient permission for that call" | The AI tried a regular order tool on the hosted server | Zerodha said order placement isn't available on the hosted version; it needs your own copy with your own keys |
| UNABLE_TO_GET_ISSUER_CERT_LOCALLY | A certificate check failed on the desktop route, often behind an office network | Zerodha said to switch off a corporate VPN or proxy, try a personal network or laptop, and update to the latest Node.js LTS |
| "Could not attach" or "Server disconnected" in Claude Desktop | The local mcp-remote bridge couldn't reach or keep the server | In June 2025 Zerodha said a change at Claude broke the link and it was fixing it. On GitHub, a Zerodha developer asked users for their Node.js version and pointed to mcp-remote's troubleshooting guide |
| Past trades are missing from the answer | The trades and orders tools cover the current day only | No fix inside Kite MCP. A GitHub user notes purchase dates sit in Zerodha Console's Tax P&L report, which Kite MCP doesn't read |

How long a Kite MCP login lasts
Zerodha doesn't publish a session length for Kite MCP. Two documented limits set it in practice:
- The Kite token. Kite Connect's docs say a login token expires "at 6 AM on the next day (regulatory requirement)", or earlier if you do a master logout from Kite Web or the app calls logout.
- The MCP session. Zerodha's published code for v0.3.2, the version the hosted server reported on 13 October 2026, sets MCP sessions to expire after 12 hours by default. We can't see whether the hosted server changes that setting.
The login tool's own description tells the AI to call it at the start of each new conversation. In plain terms, plan on logging in once a day, and again when you open a fresh chat if Claude asks.
To disconnect for good, Zerodha's product page says you can revoke access any time, and a Zerodha reply (30 July 2025) says you can revoke Kite MCP from Kite web or the Kite app. Remove the connector or config entry in Claude as well.
What Zerodha and Anthropic each say about your data
Two companies handle what the AI sees, and each states something different.
Zerodha says: your Zerodha credentials "never pass through Claude"; you sign in through Kite's two-factor login; Claude can only access data you explicitly authorise; and you can revoke access any time. We found no separate Kite MCP privacy policy. Zerodha's published code (v0.3.2) also writes a log entry marked "COMPLIANCE" on each successful login, with your user ID, user name and session ID.
What travels to the AI: whatever a tool returns, such as your holdings list with quantities and P&L, goes into your conversation so Claude can answer. For connectors added on claude.ai, Claude's help page says connections come from Anthropic's cloud.
Anthropic says: its training article covers Claude Free, Pro and Max (commercial products such as Claude for Work and the API have a separate article). It says Anthropic will use your chats, including to improve its models, if you choose to allow it, if a chat is flagged for safety review (then to improve how it detects and enforces its Usage Policy), or if you otherwise opt in, such as by joining its Trusted Tester Program. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude. The data it may use "includes the entire related conversation", and on connector data it adds the line quoted below. In plain terms, raw tool output is excluded, but numbers copied into the chat can be included. The article doesn't single out Claude's own replies that repeat your holdings, so treat those as part of the conversation.
For ChatGPT, the OpenAI MCP page a Zerodha reply linked to covers setup and which ChatGPT apps support MCP, and says nothing about how tool data is used. We did not find an OpenAI statement on this for the page.
“It does not include raw content from connectors (e.g. Google Drive), including remote and local MCP servers, though data may be included if it’s directly copied into your conversation with Claude.”

10 Kite MCP questions that review your own account
Example questions written for this page, each matched to the Kite MCP tools it needs. None uses the quote, price or chart tools, and none asks what to buy or sell. We did not run them on a live account; AI answers can be wrong and are not advice.
| Ask Claude | Tools it needs | What the answer can't include |
|---|---|---|
| List my holdings with quantity, average price and P&L, biggest position first. Don't suggest any trades. | get_holdings | When you bought each one |
| What share of my total holdings value sits in my single largest stock? | get_holdings | Whether that size was planned |
| Show my open F&O positions with quantity and unrealised P&L, and say which one is down the most. | get_positions | Your stop or exit plan for it |
| How much margin am I using right now, and how much is still free? | get_margins | The limit you set for yourself |
| Which of today's orders were rejected or cancelled, and what status message did each one get? | get_orders | What you were trying to do |
| Pick my last modified order today and walk me through each status change in its history. | get_orders, get_order_history | Why you changed it |
| How many trades did I execute today, and how many came in the last 30 minutes before close? | get_trades | Any day before today |
| List my active GTTs and check each one against a holding I own in that quantity. | get_gtts, get_holdings | Why you set each trigger |
| List my mutual fund holdings with current value and P&L. | get_mf_holdings | Your reason for each fund |
| Which exchanges and product types is my account enabled for? | get_profile | Nothing about your trading |
Tool names and scopes from the hosted server's tool list and Kite Connect docs, checked 13 Oct 2026. get_holdings includes each holding's last price as part of the holdings data.
What Kite MCP knows, and what only you can write down
Read the right-hand column of that table again. Kite MCP knows what you hold and what you did today: symbols, quantities, prices, statuses. The why is missing: the setup you saw, the stop you meant to keep, the fear or boredom behind an order you then cancelled. It also forgets yesterday, since its trade and order tools stop at the current day.
That second half is what a trading journal holds. OneTradeJournal is a manual journal: you log each trade yourself, with strategy, stop, target, emotions, mistakes and notes, and it estimates Indian charges so P&L is shown after costs. There is no link to your Zerodha account, and the journal has no way to send an order. Its paid Ask Your Journal feature answers questions about the trades you logged. Treat its answers with the same care as Claude's: they can be wrong, and they rest only on what you wrote down. Our Zerodha journal guide shows what to record for Kite trades, and the free AI journal reviewer reviews journal notes you paste in.
Kite MCP questions people search
What is the Kite MCP server URL?+
https://mcp.kite.trade/mcp, as given in Zerodha's article and README. The README also lists https://mcp.kite.trade/sse.
Is Kite MCP official or a third-party tool?+
Official. Zerodha announced it on Z-Connect on 20 May 2025, and the code sits in Zerodha's GitHub account. MCP directories also list Kite servers built by other developers; check that the address is mcp.kite.trade.
How does the Zerodha MCP login work, and why does it keep asking again?+
The AI gives you a Kite login link; you sign in on Kite's page with two-factor login. Kite login tokens expire at 6 AM each day, and Zerodha's code ends MCP sessions after 12 hours by default. If it asks again straight after a successful login, see the first row of the errors table.
Can I use Kite MCP on mobile?+
Zerodha doesn't list phones. A Zerodha reply on TradingQnA (1 July 2026) says to add the connector on Claude's web or desktop app, after which it syncs to the Claude mobile app.
Does Zerodha MCP work with ChatGPT?+
Zerodha's product page and article don't list it. A Zerodha reply on 1 October 2026 said you can use it on ChatGPT and linked OpenAI's MCP setup page. That page gives steps for the ChatGPT desktop app and says ChatGPT on the web uses MCP-backed tools supplied by plugins. A GitHub issue reporting that Kite MCP fails in ChatGPT was still open on 13 October 2026, and we did not test it.
