Static IP for algo trading in India: the exchange rule, three ways to get one, and how to whitelist it at seven brokers
A static IP for algo trading is a fixed public internet address that your broker keeps on file, and Indian brokers now reject API orders that arrive from any other address. You can get one from your internet provider, rent a server in India that comes with one, or use a strategy platform hosted on your broker's servers, which doesn't need an IP of your own. You then register it in your broker's API console, with room for one backup address and one change a week.

Static IP for algo trading: what the rule asks of you
The requirement sits in NSE's implementation standards of 5 May 2025 (NSE/INVG/67858), written under SEBI's retail algo framework. Clients who want API access "must mandatorily provide the stockbroker with a static IP address(es)". For a trader whose own code places orders, that comes down to four points:
- One primary IP, plus an optional secondary one kept for "connectivity redundancy", so a second line or server can take over.
- One change per calendar week. The exact words are quoted below.
- One client per IP. Family members, as SEBI defines family, can share one address if they ask the broker.
- Order calls are what gets checked. Six of the seven brokers in the table say prices, candles, positions and other data calls still work from any address. Groww's page talks only about order placement.
NSE's FAQ of November 2025 limits who needs one: a client static IP is required "only in case of Tech savvy Investor using API". If a strategy platform hosted on your broker's infrastructure places the orders, the IP that counts is the broker's server. The rest of the framework (the 10 orders a second threshold, daily login, algo IDs) is summarised on our trading API hub.
“Clients will have the ability to update their mapped static IP addresses as needed, but not more than once a calendar week. Clients may reach out to the broker in extraordinary cases where they have already updated the static IP once a week but need to make changes due to extenuating circumstances.”

Where and how to whitelist a static IP at seven brokers, checked 13 Oct 2026
Each broker's own docs, support pages or notices. "Not stated" means we found nothing on the pages we opened.
| Broker (API) | Where you add the IP | IPs allowed | Changing it | IPv4 / IPv6 | Family sharing | Calls that need the IP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zerodha (Kite Connect) | Kite Connect developer account > Profile > IP Whitelist > Update | 1 primary (required) + 1 secondary (optional), set once for the whole developer account and every app in it | One change per calendar week; takes effect instantly | Both supported | Spouse, dependent children and dependent parents: one developer account with separate apps, the family's client IDs added to each app, plus a declaration. Sharing outside the family may lead to suspension | Order placement. Websocket data, order book and positions work from any IP |
| Upstox | Developer apps page > My Apps > "Static IPs" in the algo trading app's row; or the PUT /v2/user/ip API | Primary + optional secondary, registered at user level, whichever app issued the token | Once per calendar week; a change invalidates existing access tokens | API docs accept IPv4 or IPv6 notation; the March 2026 community setup guide covers IPv4 only | July 2025 post: an IP "can only be used by one customer". No family process found | Place, modify and cancel order calls |
| Dhan (DhanHQ) | web.dhan.co > Profile > Get Trading & Data APIs > Add IP; or the setIP API | 1 primary + 1 secondary per account | Locked for 7 days after whitelisting; modifyIP works once every 7 days | Both supported | Eligible family accounts can map to one IP, subject to verification and approval; request by email from your registered email, copying each member's registered email | Orders, Super Orders and Forever Orders only |
| FYERS | API dashboard > user apps > "Algo trading app" > update static IP, redirect URL and permissions > Activate (new App ID ends in 200) | Not stated on its support pages; a March 2026 post on FYERS's community forum says "One app, one IP" | Not stated | Not stated | Spouse, dependent parents and dependent children: signed declaration form plus proof of relationship, then KYC check | Order placement only; data APIs need no static IP |
| Angel One (SmartAPI) | SmartAPI dashboard > "Add App" > primary static IP | Primary + optional secondary for redundancy | Not more than once a calendar week | IPv4 only "for now", per a SmartAPI forum notice; a later SmartAPI admin reply says IPv6 is "supported in a beta version" | Same family only, on a formal written request with 2FA validation | Orders and GTT |
| Kotak Neo (Trade API) | Kotak Neo > More > Trade API > create an API app > Add IP; secondary from the app details page | Up to 2: primary + optional secondary | Once every 7 days; create a new API session after changing | IPv4 now; IPv6 "coming soon" (its FAQ says an IPv6 address can be whitelisted, but the platform supports IPv4 for now) | Up to 10 family members through Trade API family management; only the parent account can add members or change the IP | Place, modify and cancel. The session must also be created from the same IP |
| Groww (Trade API) | Trade API > API Keys > Add static IP > Update | Primary + secondary as backup | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Order placement |

Two disagreements on brokers' own pages: Zerodha's FAQ says a static IP is needed "from 1 April 2025" while its static IP article says 1 April 2026; an undated SmartAPI forum reply says a static IP "cannot be shared within the family members" as of then, while Angel One's March 2026 notice allows it on a formal written request with 2FA. Dhan's docs also say each account needs its own unique IP; its family FAQs describe the exception.
How to get a static IP and register it, step by step
- 1
Decide which machine sends the orders
The IP your broker checks is the public address of whatever computer runs your order code: a home PC, an office PC, or a rented server. Pick one before you buy anything, because the route decides the cost.
- 2
Get a fixed public address for that machine
On a home or office line, ask your internet provider for a static IP and get the price in writing. On a cloud server, attach the provider's static or reserved address to it. On AWS Lightsail, for example, the default public IP changes every time you stop and restart the instance until you attach a static IP.
- 3
Check the address your requests actually leave from
Run the check from the same machine and network your code will use. Kotak Neo suggests calling
https://api.ipify.org/; if it returns the address you plan to whitelist, you are set up correctly. A VPN or proxy changes the answer: the address that counts is the gateway's. - 4
Register a primary and, if you can, a secondary IP
Use the menu path for your broker in the table above. A secondary address (a second server, or your office line) is the backup the exchange standards allow for, and it saves you from spending your weekly change in an outage.
- 5
Start a fresh session after any change
Upstox invalidates existing access tokens when the IP changes. Dhan says to regenerate the token if you added the IP after creating it. Kotak Neo needs a new session, created from the whitelisted IP.
- 6
Prove it with an order call, not a data call
Data calls work from any address at most brokers, so a working price feed proves nothing. Groww suggests a small test order. Dhan's Get Static IP call shows the detected IP and whether orders are allowed from it.
- 7
Keep your API keys off the server's code files
Whatever route you choose, store API keys and secrets in environment variables or a secrets store on that machine, not in code you copy around or share. A fixed IP makes the broker trust that machine more, so protect the machine too.
Home line, VPS or cloud: picking a route
A quick way to decide: if your code already runs on a PC that stays on through market hours, a static IP on that line is the simplest change. If it doesn't, or power and internet cuts are common where you live, a small server in an Indian data centre removes both problems. If you don't write code and use a strategy platform, check whether the platform is hosted with your broker first, because then you may not need an IP at all.
Route 1: a static IP on your home or office line
The static IP prices we could confirm on Indian providers' own pages are all on business connections. Airtel's Office Internet page says in its FAQ that a static IP costs ₹150 plus GST a month, the AOI 1499 plan includes one free, and you apply with a GSTIN, Company PAN or MSME certificate; the same page's banner also advertises a "Free Static IP" without saying which plans. Jio's Business Broadband Max, which runs on its AirFiber network, includes a public static IP, and ACT's enterprise plans page (Bengaluru prices shown by default) lists 1 Gbps plans with one free static IP. For home plans (Airtel Xstream Fiber, JioFiber, ACT home, BSNL Bharat Fibre) we found no current official price; see the warning below the cost table.
Two practical points from those pages. Airtel's FAQ says the static IP is set up either in bridge mode with your own router or through Airtel's equipment. Jio's notes say the public static IP is given directly to your device, and that on 1 Gbps plans the business gateway's LAN port 2 for the static IP runs at up to 200 Mbps.
Route 2: a VPS or cloud server in India
A virtual private server (a rented machine in a data centre) usually comes with its own public IPv4 address. DigitalOcean lists a Bangalore data centre, AWS Lightsail has Mumbai, and Akamai's Linode API lists Mumbai, Mumbai 2 and Chennai. For the big clouds you pay for the address by the hour on top of the server: AWS charges $0.005 an hour for every public IPv4 address, in use or idle, including Elastic IPs, at the same rate in all its commercial regions. Azure's price list shows the same $0.005 for a Standard static IPv4 address in Central India, and Google Cloud charges $0.005 an hour in Mumbai while the IP is in use on a standard VM.
Watch the IP version. Lightsail's cheapest bundle is $3.50 a month if it has only an IPv6 address, but a SmartAPI forum notice says Angel One supports only IPv4 for now (a later admin reply calls IPv6 support "beta"), and Kotak Neo says IPv6 platform support is "coming soon". Zerodha and Dhan accept both. Zerodha's FAQ adds a trap: if your traffic leaves over IPv6 while only an IPv4 address is whitelisted, orders are rejected.
Route 3: broker-hosted platforms and paid IP services
NSE's FAQ says that when an empanelled vendor's platform is hosted on the broker's infrastructure, the static IP is that of the broker's server. Angel One says the same in plain terms: on a no-code platform hosted on its servers, you don't provide a static IP. The platform still has to follow the framework's rules for providers, and it may charge its own fees; our algo trading charges guide covers what brokers bill. We track empanelled providers in this list.
Some VPN and proxy services sell a dedicated static IP. Zerodha's FAQ lists a VPN service alongside ISPs and cloud providers as a way to get one, and Upstox's July 2025 post accepts that some VPN providers offer this and asks you to confirm the outbound IP stays the same between sessions. The address must be yours alone: NSE's standards map one static IP to one client at a time, and Upstox says an IP already linked to one customer can't be registered by another.
What a static IP costs by route, checked 13 Oct 2026
Prices as each provider's own page or price list showed them on 13 Oct 2026. Cloud prices are in US dollars before tax and can change; the rupee amount depends on your card's exchange rate.
| Route | Example checked | Price | What you get | Conditions and notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home broadband add-on | Airtel Xstream Fiber, JioFiber, ACT home, BSNL Bharat Fibre | Not verified | Ask the provider | No current official price page found; see the warning below |
| Office broadband add-on | Airtel Office Internet | ₹150 + GST a month (₹177 with 18% GST) | Static IP on a business line; plans from ₹499 + GST a month | Apply with GSTIN, Company PAN or MSME certificate. AOI 1499 plan (₹1,499 + GST, 300 Mbps) includes one static IP free. The page's banner also says "Free Static IP" without naming plans |
| Business broadband with IP included | Jio Business Broadband Max, 801 Plan | ₹9,612 a year + GST | Public static IP, up to 100 Mbps, 1,200 GB high-speed data, on Jio's AirFiber network | GST added on "applicable components"; static IP given directly to your device |
| Business broadband with IP included | ACT enterprise, CBB5999 Basic 1Gbps | ₹5,999 a month + GST (₹66,589 a year + GST) | 1 free static IP, 1 Gbps | Enterprise plan; Bengaluru prices, the page's default city; no separate static IP price shown |
| Cloud IP only | AWS public IPv4, including Elastic IP | $0.005 an hour | The address only; the server is billed separately | Charged in use and idle; same rate in all AWS commercial regions |
| Cloud IP only | Azure Standard static public IPv4, Central India | $0.005 an hour | The address only | Azure Retail Prices list |
| Cloud IP only | Google Cloud static IP in use on a standard VM, Mumbai (asia-south1) | $0.005 an hour | The address only | Rises to $0.01 an hour if reserved and left unused |
| VPS with IP included | AWS Lightsail, smallest Linux bundle | $5 a month ($3.50 IPv6-only) | 2 vCPU, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB SSD, static IP | Mumbai bundles get half the data transfer allowance (0.5 TB) |
| VPS with IP included | DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | $4 a month | 1 vCPU, 512 MiB memory, 10 GiB SSD, public IPv4 | Bangalore data centre listed. Reserved IPs free while assigned; $5 a month if unassigned |
| VPS with IP included | Akamai (Linode) Nanode 1 GB | $5 a month | 1 vCPU, 1 GB memory, 25 GB storage, public IPv4 on most Linodes | Standard price in Mumbai, Mumbai 2 and Chennai; Jakarta ($6) and São Paulo ($7) cost more |
| Broker-hosted platform | Empanelled platform hosted on the broker's servers | No IP of your own | The broker server's IP is used | Platform fees, if any, are separate |

Before the market opens: checks that prevent rejected orders
Your connection really is static
Dhan's docs point out that a normal home Wi-Fi address is reassigned by the internet provider from time to time. Upstox says orders from dynamic IPs are rejected. If yours changed overnight, your first order of the day fails.
The code isn't running from a laptop on another network
A phone hotspot, a café's Wi-Fi or a different office line gives you a different public address from the one on file.
Your VPN or proxy address is dedicated and fixed
Upstox asks you to confirm the outbound IP doesn't change between sessions. A shared address that another customer already registered can't be yours.
The cloud server kept its address after a restart
Lightsail's default public IP changes on every stop and restart. Attach the provider's static or reserved IP before you whitelist it.
You renewed the token or session after any IP change
Upstox invalidates access tokens on an IP change; Dhan and Kotak Neo ask for a fresh token or session.
You still have this week's change in hand
Once you've used the weekly change, the exchange standards only let the broker help in "extraordinary cases". A secondary IP set up in advance is the safer fallback.
The server's IP version matches your broker
Angel One's forum notice says IPv4 only for now, and Kotak Neo says IPv6 platform support is coming. Don't rely on an IPv6-only server there. Zerodha warns that a server sending over IPv6 when only its IPv4 address is whitelisted gets orders rejected.
You tested an order call, not just prices
If DH-905 "Invalid IP" or a similar error appears at Dhan, compare the detected IP in its Get Static IP response with the one you whitelisted.
Sharing one static IP with family accounts
The exchange standards allow one static IP to serve several clients only if they belong to one family as defined in SEBI circular SEBI/HO/MIRSD/MIRSD-PoD1/P/CIR/2024/169 of 3 December 2024, and only after a request to the broker by letter, registered email or a 2FA-validated request. Zerodha and FYERS name the relationships: spouse, dependent children and dependent parents. Each broker runs its own process, set out in the table above. The two that differ most: Kotak Neo allows up to 10 family members under a parent account, and Upstox's July 2025 post says an IP can be used by only one customer, with no family process we could find.
In plain terms, a friend, a sibling who isn't dependent on you, or a trading group can't share your address. Zerodha warns that sharing outside the family may lead to suspension of the Kite Connect account and its API keys.
When orders bounce: keep a record
A rejected order is a trade your strategy wanted but didn't get, and a run of them can change your month's results without any change to the strategy. Note each rejection, the error text and the time, and whether the IP or token was the cause. If you are deciding whether to automate at all, how to start algo trading in India covers the setup side, and our kill switch comparison shows the brokers' own tools for stopping all orders in a hurry.
Static IP questions API traders ask
Is a static IP mandatory for algo trading in India?+
If your own code sends orders through a broker's API, yes: all seven brokers we checked accept API orders only from a registered IP. NSE's FAQ limits the client static IP to tech-savvy investors using an API. If a platform hosted on your broker's servers places the orders, the broker server's IP is used instead.
Can I get a static IP for algo trading for free?+
We found no free route for running your own code. Some business internet plans include one at no extra charge, such as Airtel's AOI 1499, Jio's Business Broadband Max and ACT's enterprise plans, but you pay for the plan. A VPS includes its address in the monthly price. A platform hosted with your broker needs no IP of your own, though it may charge a fee.
Do I need a static IP to fetch market data or candles?+
Not at Zerodha, Upstox, Dhan, FYERS, Angel One or Kotak Neo, whose pages say the IP check applies to order calls. Groww's page mentions only order placement and doesn't say either way.
Can I place API orders over mobile data or a VPN?+
None of the broker pages we opened bans either by name. What counts is the address each order arrives from: it must be one you registered, it must not change, and it must not already be registered to another client. A mobile connection or shared VPN address that doesn't meet those conditions will get orders rejected.
How many static IPs can I register with Zerodha?+
Two: a primary, which is required, and an optional secondary. Zerodha's FAQ says they apply to the whole Kite Connect developer account and all its apps, IPv4 and IPv6 are both accepted, and you can make one change per calendar week.
What if my IP changes and I've already used this week's change?+
Orders from the new address are rejected until it is registered. NSE's standards let you contact your broker in extraordinary cases after the weekly change is used up, so ask the broker. Registering a secondary IP ahead of time is the backup the standards provide for.
