Best broker for option trading in India? Compare eight criteria

To evaluate a search for the best broker for option trading in India, compare your required workflow with current costs, order tools, exits and locks. This guide supplies eight editable sample weights and source-linked documentation grades. It calculates no overall winner and claims no unperformed execution or support tests.

Facts checked 14 Oct 2026 against 33 sources. No affiliate links. Not investment advice.

Answer the broker query with a defined method

A search for the best broker for option trading in India is more useful when it becomes a comparison of your actual requirements. Start with the product you trade, your expected executed-order count, the order controls you need and the records you want to review. Then compare current official evidence against those requirements.

The eight sample weights below total 100%. They are editorial examples that readers can change, rather than an empirically validated allocation or a broker recommendation. The numbers beside Dhan and FYERS grade the detail of the cited documentation only. They do not score profitability, execution speed, suitability or customer experience. No overall broker score is calculated.

OneTradeJournal receives no affiliate income from brokers. This guide is educational and is a plain-English summary of cited requirements, not legal or investment advice. All external sources were opened on 14 October 2026.

Eight criteria, sample weights and source-linked evidence grades

Sources opened 14 October 2026. Download the CSV to change weights and add your own evidence. Grade 2 means the cited material identifies a relevant feature and a scope or condition; grade 1 means a listing, incomplete scope or conflicting specification; N/A means untested or unverified. These are documentation grades, not broker ratings.

20 + 15 + 15 + 15 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 = 100. The examples cover two providers to demonstrate the method; they are not an exhaustive market shortlist. Missing evidence stays N/A rather than becoming a zero-quality claim. Do not total these grades into an investment recommendation.

Read the evidence grades before changing the weights

The table provides a way to keep a comparison auditable. For a grade of 2, the linked source must support both a relevant capability and a condition or scope. A grade of 1 means the page provides a product listing, leaves a required distinction unresolved or conflicts with another official source. N/A means that the required evidence was not verified or that a hands-on test would be necessary. N/A does not mean that the broker lacks the feature.

The weights describe relative attention within this example. They are not suggested percentages of trading capital, position sizes or risk. Someone who uses only the app may give API access no weight. Someone who requires a particular order type may treat its availability as a condition that must be met before comparing prices. Such a condition should not be hidden by a high score elsewhere.

Dhan's catalogue describes options baskets and placement from its Advanced Option Chain or TradingView charts. That relevant feature and stated route meet this worksheet's grade-2 rule. Broader app/API availability and validation conditions remain unverified here. FYERS's cited basket and order-format help also gives scope and condition detail for the particular workflows listed. Neither documentation grade shows that an app is easier to use or executes better.

For execution reliability, both cells remain N/A. We have not measured acknowledgement times, fill times, rejection rates or outages through controlled account tests. Vendor latency phrases are not substituted for those measurements. The same rule applies to actual support response quality: an investor charter establishes a published route, not the experience of every customer.

Post-2024 option rules that an old broker comparison can miss

Official regulator and exchange sources opened 14 October 2026. Exact circular numbers appear in the source list. Weekday rules remain subject to exchange holidays and the dated contract file.

This is a limited decision-guide checklist, not a complete derivative rulebook. No contract quantity, lot size, order-frequency entitlement or special broker exemption is inferred.

Options traders: compare the whole workflow around each order

An option trader may need a contract-specific order window, a basket, a position-level stop and a portfolio-level exit. Those are different functions. Confirm the index, expiry, strike and product selected in the interface you intend to use. A broker offering a basket does not establish that every leg will execute together, or that a rejected leg will be replaced automatically.

Dhan's options catalogue lists baskets and several advanced order formats. FYERS documents baskets on app and web, and says its earlier BO and CO formats have been replaced by Smart Stop-Loss and Target. Use the order-type comparison for the wider broker matrix. A list of familiar abbreviations is less useful than knowing which present-day interface supports the order you require.

The rule box above matters before pricing the workflow. The premium rule concerns client-level net premium payable, while the margin required for other positions is a separate component. A broker's displayed basket estimate can differ because it applies its own documented risk-management and display policy. Dhan describes an adjustment for premium after execution in its basket calculation; that statement does not permit a trader to postpone premium required upfront.

An option buying example should not silently become an option selling example. A short position can have different margin and expiry obligations. This page uses no assumed live contract, no current premium and no modelled margin basket. Save the relevant contract and source date when doing your own comparison, and treat a rejected-order explanation as evidence for that particular request.

The F&O charges benchmark prices a defined trading month. It includes more than a per-order brokerage label. Here, ₹20 and ₹15 are sourced brokerage figures for named plans, rather than statements about the total cost of an option trade.

Scalpers: make the number of executed orders explicit

The phrase “30 trades a day” is ambiguous. The cost curve below assumes 30 completed round trips, each containing one executed entry and one executed exit. That is 60 brokerage-bearing orders. The 60- and 100-round-trip inputs are equally hypothetical volume cases, not trading targets or claims about what a scalper should do.

The curve applies a published ₹20 options brokerage to every executed order. It includes only brokerage before GST. Exchange fees, statutory taxes, any provider-specific clearing charge, forced exits, subscriptions and execution-price differences are outside it. A lower per-order quote cannot establish a lower complete cost until those other components are compared on the same turnover.

Count partial exits, additions and order slicing separately where they create additional executed orders under the tariff. An order cancelled before execution is not the same billing event as an executed child order. Record the actual order IDs and contract-note lines rather than multiplying a strategy name by a guessed flat amount.

Computed from the published Zerodha/Dhan standard options tariff opened 14 October 2026. Each assumed round trip is two executed orders. These volumes are examples, not a recommended trading frequency; all other costs are excluded.

Equity intraday: where 0.03% reaches a ₹20 cap

Zerodha and Dhan publish the lower of 0.03% or ₹20 for the relevant standard equity-intraday tariff. The assumed order values below are unrelated to a live share or trade recommendation. This calculation is brokerage only, before GST and other charges.

    Convert the percentage
    0.03% = 0.0003
    Solve the crossover
    ₹20 ÷ 0.0003 = ₹66,666.666… per executed order
    Assumed ₹50,000 executed order
    ₹50,000 × 0.0003 = ₹15; lower than ₹20
    Assumed ₹1,00,000 executed order
    ₹1,00,000 × 0.0003 = ₹30; capped brokerage ₹20
    Two assumed ₹50,000 equity-intraday orders
    ₹15 + ₹15 = ₹30 brokerage before GST

    Sources: [1], [2]

Equity intraday and futures need their own tariff row

The percentage crossover belongs to the stated equity-intraday example. It is not a way to reduce an options flat-order fee by using premium turnover. Zerodha's standard schedule separately lists percentage-or-cap brokerage for futures and flat ₹20 for options. Use the product row that actually applies, including any special account or plan conditions.

At exactly the crossover, both components are equal before billing rounding. Below it, the percentage component determines the fee; above it, the cap does. Splitting an order can change the number of billed executions, so calculate the real order pattern rather than assuming the cap applies once to a whole day's volume.

A zero-brokerage intraday slogan also needs a segment and a current plan. It does not mean that exchange fees, statutory charges or broker service charges disappear. The charges changelog holds the shared statutory-rate reference. Reusing its rates avoids presenting a different tax schedule beside an identical brokerage example.

Dhan's former women's discount is another reason to read dated notices. Its official discontinuation announcement says the 50% intraday and F&O discount ended effective 8 July 2024. We use its current standard ₹20 F&O quote, rather than promoting the old ₹10 offer as a present entitlement. Eligibility-based claims require current terms, not the continuing availability of an older announcement.

For a scalping workflow, shortcuts, chart orders or a strategy basket may be relevant to usability. They do not prove an acknowledgement or fill-time advantage. We have not assigned a “fastest” label, run a latency benchmark or recorded exchange fills for this guide. Any personal comparison should identify the interface, connection, order type and time period so that its limits are visible.

First-time traders: distinguish a segment lock from an exit feature

First-time traders and students: inspect the control before enabling F&O

A simple-looking app does not establish that a derivative product is suitable for a beginner or student. The older disclosure quote above is identified with its FY2021–22 source period. SEBI's newer FY26 release reports 87.7% loss-makers. These figures come from different periods and are not interchangeable measures of a particular broker's customers.

The 19 May 2023 circular requires brokers to display the specified risk disclosures. Its login provision says clients may be prompted to read them, possibly in a pop-up, and shall be allowed to proceed only after acknowledging them. It does not justify claiming that we saw every broker's current onboarding screen. We have not completed F&O activation or verified the income-document flow in live accounts for this guide.

Before comparing a lock, separate three outcomes: stopping new orders, closing existing positions and sending an alert. Zerodha's segment switch requires open positions and orders to be closed first, and its help gives a 12-hour re-enable interval. Groww's cited lock requires positions closed first and restricts F&O and Commodities for the day; its reversible Pause is a separate control.

Dhan's app help has a specific second-activation rule, while the API gives its own no-open-position/no-pending-order prerequisite. FYERS Take a Break becomes effective after the Smart Exit condition triggers and requires All eligible positions selected. New orders between enabling the feature and the trigger can prevent its activation. Those conditions matter more than simply counting a “kill switch” tick in a feature list.

The kill-switch comparison explains the wider set of documented locks. The P&L exit comparison separates account or selected-position exits from alerts. Neither feature should be described as a guaranteed maximum account loss: an exit instruction still has to execute in the market.

Build a shortlist with evidence you can revisit

    1. 1

      Write one required workflow

Specify the market, segment, interface and order sequence. For example, app-only equity intraday and API-driven futures are different requirements; no trade is being proposed here.

    2. 2

      Mark essential conditions before scoring

A required segment or an irreversible daily lock cannot be replaced by an unrelated chart feature. Record a missing fact as unverified and seek the relevant official terms.

    3. 3

Price an identical hypothetical activity pattern

Keep executed-order counts, turnover and days the same across tariffs. Separate brokerage, plan fees, data fees and service charges. Label every assumption.

    4. 4

Attach a source to each documentation grade

Use the dated official help, tariff or specification that supports the selected scope. Keep contradictions visible instead of choosing the more attractive number.

    5. 5

Leave performance questions open until tested

A personal test would need a reproducible method and dated account evidence. Do not turn a marketing latency claim or a star rating into an execution result.

API users: separate free order access from paid data

DhanHQ's product page says its Trading API is free and lists Data API pricing separately. Dhan's billing help specifies ₹499 plus applicable taxes per month, renewing every 30 days. FYERS's product page describes free Trading API access. These access-price statements do not waive brokerage or establish that every possible data product and third-party service is free.

The request-limit figures need equally careful scope. Dhan's v2 documentation prints order limits of 10 per second and 7,000 per day, alongside minute and hour limits. Its product page instead prints 25 order placements per second and 5,000 maximum order requests per day. Both are official sources, so the applicable limit is unresolved here; the worksheet's limited grade reflects that conflict.

FYERS's product page says up to 100,000 requests per day. That is a different label from an order-only limit. We do not put it beside Dhan's order count as if both measured the same activity, and we do not reproduce a vendor millisecond claim as a tested result. Consult endpoint-specific documentation and current account limits before designing a workflow.

The API cost guide covers access and order-related charges in more detail. This decision guide stays with the documented price and scope questions. It does not approve an algorithm, provide a trading signal or certify that a chosen automation complies with every applicable rule.

An offshore forex or CFD result needs a separate authorisation check

    • Check the relevant entity and service

A global brand name or a foreign licence does not answer whether the relevant forex person or electronic trading platform is authorised by RBI for the stated service.

    • Use the RBI Alert List with its date

The cited list is updated 19 November 2025 and also includes promoters of unauthorised entities or ETPs. Its website footer date is not the list's update date.

    • Do not treat a missing name as approval

RBI says the list is not exhaustive and that absence should not be assumed to establish authorisation. Use the linked authorised-person and ETP lists for a real status check.

    • Keep the products separate

This page compares documented Indian broker workflows and does not offer an offshore CFD shortlist, deposit instructions or a universal legal conclusion. Obtain professional guidance for a proposed cross-border arrangement.

Keep the comparison useful after the first visit

A saved comparison should show the source date, the applicable plan, unresolved questions and the observations you actually made. A public charter can help locate account statements, contract notes and complaint procedures, but it cannot demonstrate how support handled your case. Likewise, a source-linked documentation grade should change when a tariff or feature changes; it should not become a permanent reputation score.

OneTradeJournal is a manual trading journal, with trades entered by hand. It does not connect to brokers, place orders, provide signals or block a trade. It can support a separate record of your decisions, while the broker remains the source of execution and account records. This guide has no affiliate income and does not choose a broker for you.

Refresh the cited costs and controls quarterly and after material announcements. Retain unverified questions, compare the same activity pattern and keep suitability separate from a feature checklist. Those records give a clearer basis for a decision than an unexplained winner label.
